wah, NST says sorry

Well, whoopie. NST’s provided the teeming mob with the requisite apology it doesn’t deserve. If there’s anything to apologize for, it’s for NST to apologize for not sticking it to people who have lodged large, expansive police reports. Mind you, I have a feeling these police reports detail nothing less than the underwear-switching habits of editors, sub-editors and super-editors because, really, what is there to report about?

“They have offended against Islam!” is the gist of these reports, probably. I imagine a weary police corporal staring dull-eyed at yet another yahoo, slack-lipped and indifferent. He’s probably thinking about lunch, prayers and getting back to his urgent paper-work (which, in other circumstances, is laughable). He looks past his irate, bang-table citizen and sees a long queue of other similarly irate, bang-table types. Such a police corporal will suddenly find religion again, and will offer prayers for showers of meteors or dung to rain on these men.

I wouldn’t mind, either. The police have enough trouble keeping their asses on their seats with all the brouhaha surrounding their lock-up practices and what-not, drive-by petty hijackers with penknives and 16 year old snatch thieves - now add to this the prospect of following up on a few dozen complaints lodged by the very loud few.

How exciting. Remind me never to take up law enforcement in my next life - at least in Malaysia.

The apology proper itself is interesting, but ultimately unsatisfying. Honestly, if the apology was unreserved, then it would be more honourable to apologize and be done with it. I would’ve wondered if an apology was necessary at all. If it wasn’t, and if I was going to stick to my guns, I’d rat out on that TV2 newsbit and rave against mad, egotistical bloggers - not do it while apologizing.

Not a good display of class, to be honest; the insinuations should be left to sly pundits and such.

The NST’s apparently lodged a few reports against some individuals, and no doubt Jeff Ooi will be included in that line-up. I’m sure the veteran blogger’s got a battery of lawyers on standby to meet the NST’s assault - and it’s probably inevitable, now - so, hey, possibly some entertainment before the year is out.
