reduced and recycled

I got a call from a courier guy who was, at the time, standing outside the gates to my home. He had a package for me, and I wasn’t there - naturally. I picked it up later, but with a sigh at the back of my mind; the package had the familiar weight of thick books and I began mentally counting down the days till my next set of exams.

I have the books lying on my bed now. I’ve not taken a look at them, because I intend to prolong today as long as possible. Come tomorrow, it’ll have to be rushed studying and trying to meet deadlines. What’s different this time ’round is my involvement in some other business projects, with a few friends.

Pressure, pressure!

I was backing out my car this evening when I heard a small ‘click’. I wondered what it was, and when I had backed out completely, I saw a stray, black cat limp off in the direction of the drain. I panicked. This cat was special - special because some of us at home have taken to feeding it, stupid, sentimental idiots that we are.

I got out of my car to take a closer look; it seemed as if I woke him up, he was blinking his eyes in what I can only describe as “blearily”. I wondered if it was shock. Then the cat turned its head and I saw a gash along one side of its mouth. I thought it was his tongue, then a stray headlight made him look as if he was baring his fangs in an odd, fixed fashion.

It was very disturbing. There were bare patches on its body, as if it’d been in a few scraps with the neighbour’s dogs - or with rats. I couldn’t tell. I got back into my car as it sauntered over to the main storm drain nearby. It looked unsteady. As I drove off, I couldn’t rid myself of that dreadful feeling that I may have just ended its life.
