conflicts of interest

Things are moving in a very dangerous direction, it seems. A whole long list of incidents that seem to be leading up to something truly ominous. A short list:-

  • The uproar regarding that stupid, ridiculous UPM coursebook on ‘Ethnic Relations‘.
  • A group of students belabouring a point to another group of students… I mean ‘belabouring’ loosely, of course.
  • Calls to stop Article 11 convening in Johor Bahru… note the threats.
  • More calls to stop Article 11, apparently by Johor’s UMNO Youth and PAS. What strange bedfellows. Are they trying to out-Islam each other? Who knows.
  • Confrontations in Parliament over the issue of whether Malaysia is an Islamic state or not.

And a rather ridiculous, ill-advised podcast from moNSTerblog.com.my featuring that confusing minister in the Prime Minister’s department himself, Nazri Aziz. He doesn’t agree with the setting up of the Inter-Faith Commission, of course. Why would he?

(Btw, a small question to moNSTer bloggers, if they read this at all: do the words ‘complicit’ and ‘co-option’ mean anything to you? I mean, it’s all well and good taking a page off of ST’s own assault on the senses, viz. STOMP.sg, but I wonder if you’d all agree to being complicit - if not directly, then by association - with a newspaper that vigorously defends the government’s position, reason be damned.

The whole moNSTer blog project? This word comes to mind. My apologies, but it has to be said.)

I’m waiting and I’m brooding, waiting for tomorrow. I wonder if there will be mobs gathering about Hotel Selesa tomorrow. I wonder that sort of intimidation works on people, and I wonder at the sort of people who have to resort to such.

“If at first they don’t agree, beat them until they do.”

I don’t think the moNSTers are all that political. But I don’t blame you. Everybody’s acting as if all of the bread-and-butter issues have already been solved.

You know, speaking of the Nazri podcast… My first impression was that our esteemed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (who’s role is to… minister?) painted a dim picture of Malaysians, in general. I had hoped that this was his own narrow view.

However, seeing the UPM mob thing and the continuing efforts to derail any discussion on Article 11 discussion makes me wonder: is Nazri right about his dim view of the rakyat?

    Walski shudders to think…

Isn’t that the ironic thing? He immediately assumes that Malaysians, in their roots, are still parochial simpletons who make decisions without a hint of reason. And the example he cites, of all things, refers to race! The wonders never cease!
