Controversial picture, isn’t it? DPM Najib flanked by his right hand man on his left (how would you read that, Tian Chua?) and the super-imposed face of a false Altantuya on his right. In one picture, you have an RPK-esque rumour, a case of mistaken identity (and whose, and the substance of which is what, I wonder?) and the scandal of an unanswered question.
Whoever came up with the picture is either brilliant, or accidentally so, don’t you think?
And the reaction this picture’s garnered, at least in parliament, isn’t much different from the reaction people had, no doubt, when the newspapers announced that famous TV personality Razak Baginda was charge for possibly abetting a murder – or some such. Do the charges themselves matter?
It’s like “School for Scandal†all over again.
What I found dreadfully funny is how a germ of a suggestion takes on the mantle of truth, which is then derided but secretly applauded, and then now finally establishes itself as an unshakable meme in the collective.
You say the picture’s horribly bad PR, I say the picture’s devastatingly effective, unfunny satire. Oh come on, just look at the juxtapositions: a successfully suicidal U-nee vs. the strangling of ‘truth’, the possible libel vs. a cuckold judiciary, there’s so much – and maybe too much – to make of it; too much because politics is more about perception than it is about truth, isn’t it?
Or is it, really? Maybe in the absence of the real picture, its representation fails at being funny to a lot of people because it smacks of a bit of bitterness and cynicism. Maybe it’s time people woke up to their own bitterness, cynicism and apathy, ya?
And the recrimination is coming in from all sides:
There are the bloggers who are scandalized by the picture, but not willing to face the irony of their ambivalence to DPM Najib’s absence.
There are the members of parliament who rail against Tian Chua’s “cheap tactics†right after Ijok’s flurry of cheap shots and thuggery
There are the wise naysayers who believe they hold some idealistic moral high ground from which they rain their vitriol on “the administrationâ€.
And best of all, there are the “I-told-you-so’s†from out of the woodwork who really do want a Jesus Christ, Prophet Muhammad or Buddha to run the country, not fallible human beings.
It is, actually, a marvelous bit of anarchy, eh?

All the wah-wah-wah on Sunday is known as tripping over their tongues.
Must be due to all that boot-licking….
Monday. Quiet on the Western front. Probably preparing to be trashed by PAS for that Prophet cartoon analogy.
@liz: did you find the outrage funny? No offense to those reading, but witness the righteous anger over the use of U-nee’s picture in place of Altantuya.. declaring the picture was a cheap trick.. blah blah. I was caught so off-guard by the vehemence I was wondering if I was witnessing the Second Coming. :p
Yah, I read somewhere that someone had picked up on Hishammudin’s conflating Malaysian UMNO politicians with the Prophet - I think it was reported in the Beebs that he clarified his comments. The great thing about his slip, of course, is how he’s just showed everyone how vainglorious our fearless leaders really are.
(this is damn fine comedy don’t you think?!)
I’ve not laughed so much for a long while - esp. when bloggers closed one eye and discovered “self-righteousness” ….
Tian didn’t know who the headshot of the woman was - he picked it up from The Star. That’s butt-kicking Wong CW! Hahahahahahaha!
xpyre without da d:
In Malaysia when MSM only carries Opposition news when there are “negative” lights, it’s such a delight they made an XXception to Tian Chua’s artfool piece. Now the MSM EDitors are in a minefield not knowing how to play chess with an artiste. Desi cts to be entertained:)
@liz: talk about catching them out with their own blunders. bloody farcical!
@desi: but they will still find a way to make him pay. I can’t imagine Tian Chua not knowing that would happen. The people he’s dealing with are pretty vindictive.
Well, at least he’s given some of us quite a bit to laugh about, watching the ants scrambling screaming “battle stations! battle stations! big bad opposition launched broadside!”
