I’ve got to admit; I never thought I’d see the day when things would change so dramatically. The melodrama of the last four years that was Badawi’s reign was disastrous - in some ways so much more disastrous than Mahathir’s despotism. The last four years has been a story of incompetence compounded upon impotence, playing out like the denouement of some horrible, long, drawn out day-time television series. A fitting end to UMNO’s dominance in the Malaysian political landscape? One can hope, I suppose, and the sun will rise today on the fulfillment of at least some of those hopes and wishes.
I’ve been trying to access some sites to get the latest news on seat distribution by state, but according to the NST, Barisan Nasional have won based on a simple majority of 148 parliamentary seats garnered. BN’s looking to materialize a win of 16 more seats to gain the 2/3rd upper hand in government, and are “waiting for results later today”. That sounds ominous, doesn’t it? Oh, well..
In any case, from what I gather, the Opposition holds Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Selangor and Perak (BN has just conceded defeat). As RPK had predicted (and as reported by Malaysiakini), five states have been liberated from BN control. It’s about 4.20am now, and the latest off the Malaysiakini live coverage (which is excellent):
PM: ‘We’ve lost, we’ve lost’ - 4.12am
These were the only words which Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi could muster when quizzed on the ruling coalition’s shocking defeat in five states.Abdullah was posed with the question during a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur. He was accompanied by his wife Jeanne, deputy Najib Abdul Razak and other BN leaders.
The prime minister added that he will make a media statement after analysing the results in detail.
Analysis? Just really start listening to what the Rakyat is saying, Badawi, and do the honourable thing: leave and trouble us no more with your facile leadership. And take BN with you while you’re at it. One more elections and BN may not survive. I think this is what they call “payback”. I think this elections have proven: if you’re not with the people, you’re against the people.

(@luthien: update me hor.. heh heh :D we meet up when you’re back if can?)
From the ground , some people (espc. older ones) are afraid that the opposition pact may unravel. We must stop the opposition pact from splitting or joining BN at all costs. For his safety in UMNO elections, Pak Lah may try to influence either one of the three to go to BN, thus ensuring one or two more states to be under him. It happened before, and may happen again. Hope the online community can stop any of these from happening.
